I, Dash Doorhandle of the House of Bondo, being of sound mind and judgement, do confess the following sins:
1. I have a bit of a thing for the Chevette. They’re awful cars, but they hold up to one really good crash. I also enjoy the fact That over 11 model years, GM lost money on every single one they sold.
2. I have never seen Galaxy Quest. I have been scolded for this and will remedy the situation.
3. I seriously once attempted the high-concept custom of making my plastic Saturn SW2 into a woody wagon with real oak and ash veneer. Did one door for a test panel, made nice garage art, was expensive, stupid idea.
4. I have Painted a whole car with 19 cans of Tremclad.
5. Other customizing sins have included: fun fur interiors, speedholes flames and slotmags with 205/60/13tires (all on the same Chevette), and baby blue dingleballs all around the headliner of my mom’s 1981 reliant.
6. I have been that asshole tying up his exhaust with bailing wire on the side of a busy street.
7. Have never waivered from the belief that 5 shitty cars equals more than one new reliable one.
8. I tend not to proofread, capitalize, or punctuate properly when bullshitting about cars on the prestigious internet. Even though I can.
9. I don’t know everything about cars.
10. Have been seriously considering putting a 5-colour firebird on the hood of my 2010 vibe, I like the the blue 1980 example best.
11. Will shoot metalflake on anything, not kidding, just for the practice. (photographic evidence of cool flakejobs is hard to capture the magic of on a cell phone, I’ll try).

Another fan of the chevette. Crappy car but very hard to kill. Used to play around in an old gravel pit with junkyard beaters. The chevette out lasted them all and was the best at jumping.

I murdered at least 3 Chevette engines in that red one alone, oil leaks so bad the tail lights would drip after a highway run, 2 head gaskets, one driven burning a combination of gas, oil, antifreeze for about 3 months, having to make my left turns before the smoke caught up to me, Siezed then un siezed, clutch dumping at 7,000 rpm. Each time the car drove to the place where it’s engine was swapped.

this is micro-flake. I did my Saturn in green bass-boat flake. Like 1973 Glasstron style. Will find pics.

I have to reshoot some clear on my Cougar. The base laid down perfect on the panel I did, the clear....not so much. Laid it down too soon. Gonna have to sand it down a bit and reshoot. Oh well, at least I stopped the cancer.

One futhur confession. I painted the Honda twice before it was good enough to admit I did it. (and I’m not that picky about the finish on 15 year old family cars.)

clear coat is very hard like that, very hard to see how good and thick your coverage is. Several thin coats are the only way

My cousin had a blue metal flake Torino..32 coats of it. It had such a deep feeling to the paint it looked like you could just fall into it. Just beautiful.

Agreed, got a line on a red 82 for a couple hundred bucks, seriously thinking about it. Mrs. Doorhandle-Bondo has negotiated veto power on Cars, with good reason.

Dude, buy that shit. You can’t find one anywhere in MI. I remember about 2 years ago I found an ‘86 that needed a trans for like $300, but I have nowhere to keep it or wrench on it.

The CRV was done in my dark, dirty, garage. Twice. Having a light breeze and a consistent temp a little above room is more important than actually knowing how to spray in this case.
The Saturn, I used a dirty trick on. I painted the roof pearl white, took the car home, removed the entire body, took all the panels back to the booth, laid them flat on stands, went to town on it, reassemlbed car. will do a post on that story some time.

No worries. My paint work on this car was a panel that’s about 1 square foot. The car had a full repaint the year before. Apparently, the body shop missed a little rust on the one panel. The fox body Cougars are notorious for rusting in this particular spot.....

Damn plastic cars XD
Do you use a single stage or a multistage paint? How much prep do you do?

I learned with the big flake to not knock yourself out with refinishing before you spray, it’s gonna be chunky. No matter how much you keep clearing it it won’t go flat. must wet sand and re-clear to get it right, there’s no way around it. Next attempt was a Datsun truck, painted it black, cleared it, blew dry flake on wet clear then cleared some more.
Moved on to micro flake after that. Check out the paint with pearl website their product is good and cheap enough to just mess around with. I am actually a body and paint guy, but don’t do it for a living, I do it for expensive shits and giggles.
My current process is to prep the car in 4/6/800 grit wet, then paint the whole thing in black basecoat, and the colour is the flake itself. The dry flake gun is tricky, consistent pressure is crucial to get it even. the microflake is so tiny it only takes a couple coats of clear to bury it and get the clear nice and flat. Single stage paint is not an option for this silly business.
